4% of Illinois corn emerges


SPRINGFIELD – There were 5.1 days suitable for field work during the week ending April 30, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued for Illinois on Monday.


Statewide, the average temperature was 50.4 degrees, 6.1 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.26 inches, 0.61 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 19 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 2 percent very short, 11 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus.


Corn planted reached 40 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 29 percent. Corn emerged reached 4 percent, equal to the 5-year average. Soybeans planted reached 39 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 15 percent. Soybeans emerged reached 3 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 1 percent.


Winter wheat headed was 15 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 11 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.
