Industry leaders gather in Champaign
CHAMPAIGN – Farmers and those involved in the Illinois soybean industry had the chance to network during last week’s Soybean Summit held in Champaign.
A hybrid option was offered to attendees this year with a few joining in virtually during the sessions. Keynotes included a representative from University of Illinois discussing projects funded through the Illinois Soybean Checkoff, including phosphorus work and looking at how fall application is beneficial.
Another talking point included a project planned for next year on soil health, water quality and climate smart footprints of soybeans.
“We are really excited at the association for that project,” admits Jennifer Jones, Illinois Soybean Association research agronomist.
Collaboration information was shared by a North Carolina State Extension specialist on how we can mirror that in Illinois. Plenty of breakout sessions were also included.
“We’ve had some good conversations around the Science for Success program which is a collaboration among Extension professionals around the U.S.,” said Jones.
An Advanced Precision panel examined high-yielding soybeans while plant pathologists and entomologists shared information.
Panel discussions ranged from conservation and soil to mental health on the farm.
“It is great to see people across the industry coming together and just sharing ideas and talking,” added Jones.
Illinois Soybean Association, based in Bloomington, continues to grow with the staff almost doubling in the past year. According to Jones, ISA is investing in the “hands-on” work for farmers as they continue looking into research opportunities and partnerships to help farmers grow the best bean.
