State corn harvest 2% complete


There were 6.4 days suitable for field work during the week ending September 10, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued for Illinois on Monday.


Statewide, the average temperature was 71.2 degrees, 1.2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.3 inches, 0.34 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 22 percent very short, 43 percent short, and 35 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 23 percent very short, 33 percent short, and 44 percent adequate.


Corn dough reached 98 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 95 percent. Corn dented reached 87 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 80 percent. Corn mature reached 42 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 32 percent. Corn harvested reached 2 percent, equal to the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 6 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.


Soybeans setting pods reached 97 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 95 percent. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 27 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 18 percent. Soybean condition was rated 6 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 14 percent excellent.
