Stress management tools available
Uncertainty seems to be the only certainty during spring planting time.
Farmers face many challenges such as too much rain, too little rain, long hours, crop diseases and machinery breakdowns. The University of Illinois Extension reports most farm injuries occur during the spring and fall when stress and fatigue increase risks for farmers.
Mental health conditions add to the risk factors for those involved in the agricultural industry. Though they are faced with multiple challenges, farm operators are unlikely to seek help for various mental health issues. U of I Assistant Professor Josie Rudolphi will discuss the signs and symptoms of stress and offer methods to cope during a free webinar starting April 1.
Rudolphi suggests using a "Four A" method this planting season of "avoid, adapt, alter and accept." This will allow farmers to successfully manage stress and unpredictability in the spring.
